Zonta Club of Blacktown involves community libraries in Zonta Says NO

Zonta Clubs in District 24 were provided with a template letter and encouraged to engage the city/shire councils in their respective local government areas to recognize the need to prevent and eliminate violence against women by holding displays for 25 November and the 16 Days of Activism.

The Zonta Club of Blacktown decided on a library display at the big, central library at Blacktown as a means to reach as many people as possible with the ‘Zonta says no to violence’ campaign. The Library asked the club to do the display in conjunction with the OWDVN (Outer Western Sydney Domestic Violence Network) who supplied a lot of material relevant to the local area. The Zonta Club of Blacktown made cutout cardboard doll figures in ethnic costumes to highlight the message that violence cuts across all cultures (as Blacktown is a very multicultural area), displayed information from the RSPCA regarding minding pets in situations of violence, highlighted information on a new forensic medical service for victims of physical violence that can be used in court, as well as much Zonta material as could fit in the display cabinet.

The club said they were very pleased with the display and now hope to take it to other smaller libraries in the area. They tried to mix advocacy as well as some practical resources. The OWDVN has now asked the club to join their monthly meetings and this will be very good as the club will be able to keep up with statistics re domestic violence in our area and any other new initiatives.

District 24 also provided all Zonta Clubs in this District with bookmarks highlighting the campaign logo .

The Zonta Club Münster organized a very special event to focus public attention on the international day of “violence against women“ on 25 November:

Two groups with 5 Zontians each moved through the center of the town on two different routes to the main library. All of them were dressed in black with black hats on their heads, decorated with orange ZONTA says NO-ribbons. The head of a group wore a white mask with closed mouth, symbolizing the speechlessness of the victims. The other Zontians behind her proclaimed statistics about violence against women. Further Zontians accompanied the group and distributed artistically designed cards with the emergency-hotlines in Münster to the public.
